I don’t profess to know anything about South Korea or their health care system. But none the less, I was surprised to read the headline “21 More Rare Diseases Get Free Coverage“ in the Korea Times. The article goes on to say that families below a certain income have free medical coverage for rare diseases, provided by the National Health Insurance Corp. Currently this translates to 28,900 patients suffering from 111 rare and hard-to-treat diseases. Now, I know that there thousands times more rare diseases that 111, but I couldn’t help but think how wonderful this must be for those 28,900 patients and their families.

“The government will cover not only expenses for treatment but provide them with pieces of medical equipment that are essential for walking, breathing and other aids to help them conduct their daily activities. Those with muscle disorders will also receive care by visiting nurses free of charge,” center official Ku Soo-kyeong said.

Insurance takes up much of my energy and time. When I should be caring for my family or working, I am instead soliciting letters of support, appealing denied claims, and trying to keep my kids covered by insurance. The threat of losing insurance has caused me to lose may nights of sleep and to make decisions that I wish I did not have to make!
